Karien Basson is a certified NLP Life Coach © and forms part of the Finesse Voelgoed Magazine team as Editor of Vroue wat glo.
She has been in the media industry for more than twenty years and – as a manager, public relations officer, journalist, and radio & TV presenter – she still finds a reason to tell another story, because her passion for God and people is genuine!
Karien is a speaker and the author of several published titles, in collaboration with CUM Books and Carpe Diem Media. She is a marathon and ultramarathon athlete who has braved the Two Oceans Marathon and The Comrades Marathon.

At the age of 43, I look back on my journey of faith and realise anew how great and indescribable God’s grace is. This omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent God who controls the universe has always had time to answer me in such a way that I could understand.
I was only eight years old when I came to know God. As a logical thinker, I wanted clear answers from God; precisely because everything around me could be explained biologically or scientifically. I never questioned the reality of a living God, but His character traits, as seen through the eyes of others, were always contrary to how I experienced Him personally. With the desperate pleas of a mother’s prayers addressed to a heavenly Father, my mother asked Him to meet her constantly-searching daughter in a very personal way. I was given my own little yellow box of Bread on the Water Bible promises. I would ponder and pray about a specific topic, and then ask God to answer me through one of the scripture cards that I would draw. I then read the entire chapter and trusted God to answer me in this way.
It was certainly not like a Lotto machine, full of luck and potential answers. I only used the box when I had big questions to make. That box of Bible cards carried me through the toughest choices in my life … to this day. God met me at my level of faith again and again – it was logical, black on white, but it still required faith and a relationship with Him to hear His voice. Not because I am special, but because I had established a non-negotiable principle of seeking guidance through His Word.
In October 2022, it was a Bible card and the words of Psalm 9, dotted with sports terminology, that led me to start writing this sports book.
“I’m thanking you, God, from a full heart, I’m writing the book on your wonders. I’m whistling, laughing, and jumping for joy; I’m singing your song, High God. The day my enemies turned tail and ran; they stumbled on you and fell on their faces. You took over and set everything right; when I needed you, you were there, taking charge. You blow the whistle on godless nations; you throw dirty players out of the game, wipe their names right off the roster. Enemies disappear from the sidelines, their reputation trashed, their names erased from the halls of fame. God holds the high centre, he sees and sets the world’s mess right. He decides what is right for us earthlings, gives people their just deserts. God’s a safe house for the battered, a sanctuary during bad times. The moment you arrive, you relax; you’re never sorry you knocked. Sing your songs to Zion-dwelling God**, tell his stories to everyone you meet:** How he tracks down killers yet keeps his eye on us, registers every whimper and moan. Be kind to me, God; I’ve been kicked around long enough. Once you’ve pulled me back from the gates of death, I’ll write the book on Hallelujahs; on the corner of Main and First I’ll hold a street meeting; I’ll be the song leader; we’ll fill the air with salvation songs.”

I will never forget the words of Joyce Meyer: “Engrained in our culture is the belief that unbending discipline is the only sure way to success. You must go to the gym five times a week, never order the dessert, and don’t even think about buying that dress you keep staring at in the store window. Breaking from such a regimented lifestyle is a sign of weakness, right? Wrong! Though setting rules in our lives are important, it’s just as important that we break them from time-to-time. Structure is a powerful tool, but when diverging from your own goals is seen as catastrophic, it can have a hugely negative effect on us. Balance is a core value in life and every once in a while we deserve to indulge in a guilty pleasure or two. So don’t feel bad about straying from your goals every once-in-a while and in fact, embrace it: eat the cookie and buy the shoes!”
Why am I sharing this with you? Because maybe you have been thinking about writing a book, but life and responsibilities have kept you occupied. Maybe God has shown you a clear direction or message for a time such as this, but you have just been too busy to react to the prompting. Until now. It is time to ‘eat the cookie and buy the shoes…!’ or in other words, make a decision, and start writing just a page or two every day! Believe me, the yearning to write will not disappear, so be mindful, prepare, plan and plan some more before you put pen to paper. LISTEN to God’s guidance and then write your book.
